At Norscot, we take pride in the people who help our company thrive. Today, we’re excited to introduce Aaron Smillie, who brings over 25 years of timber frame expertise to his role in sales and architectural design.
Aaron’s journey began in Inverness, growing up between Elgin, Moray and the Isle of Lewis. After leaving school in 1998, he trained as an Architectural Technician with a respected firm in Elgin while completing his HNC at Moray College. By 2001, Aaron was fully qualified and joined a timber frame kit company, focusing on self-build homes—producing technical drawings, thermal energy solutions and supporting sales. Over the years, his role evolved to include sales development and training, passing on his extensive knowledge to new team members.
Why Norscot?
“The chance to join a well-established company with a strong focus on self-build kits was a major attraction. I’m excited to combine my architectural and sales experience to help clients bring their dream homes to life.”
A Day in the Life
Aaron’s role is a blend of technical and client-facing work:
- In the office: Creating planning and warrant drawings, producing thermal energy compliance documents and handling new enquiries.
- On the road: Meeting clients on-site to discuss design ideas, collaborating with architects and engineers and attending trade shows across the country.
What He Loves About the Job
“I’ve always believed in meeting clients face-to-face. Understanding what they want and finding creative, cost-effective solutions is incredibly rewarding. I also enjoy the challenge of achieving thermal compliance through ever-changing SAP energy calculations. No two houses are the same, and seeing clients create a home that truly suits them is the best part.”
Looking Ahead
Aaron is excited about expanding Norscot’s kit offerings and working with new clients, architects and engineers. “Growing this segment of the company is a thrilling challenge, and I’m eager to contribute to its success.”
The Future of Construction
“Regulations are always evolving, and I enjoy the challenge of achieving compliance through design—whether it’s new layouts to meet standards or thermal compliance under future home standards.”
Outside the Office
Aaron is a Scout and Explorer leader on Monday and Friday nights, with regular weekend camps and summer adventures. He also loves travelling to Morocco for its authentic and undiscovered feel.
