Meet the Team: Nishum Somel, Timber Frame Technician

At Norscot, we take pride in the people who help our company thrive. Today, we’re excited to introduce you to one of our newest members, Nishum Somel, who joined us around 18 months ago as a Timber Frame Technician. Nishum works remotely but stays closely connected with the rest of the Norscot team and our customers.

A Passion for Timber Frame Design

Nishum plays a key role in helping create customers’ dream homes. As a Timber Frame Technician, he designs structural frames and coordinates deliveries and materials. He turns architectural designs into manufacturing‑ready drawings and works closely with customers to bring their vision to life, ensuring every project runs smoothly.

“I love timber frame design,” Nishum says. “Being able to deliver that to an end customer who turns that house design into a home is very rewarding.” His enthusiasm is palpable, especially as he shares his personal goal: “It’s always been my goal to build my own house, and the amount of knowledge at Norscot about that process is incredible to learn from.”

Day-to-Day in the Role

A typical day for Nishum begins with CAD work, updating drawings and converting architectural designs into practical plans for both the manufacturing and site teams. Collaboration with customers is also key. “There’s a lot of liaising with customers to make sure their home is exactly how they envisioned it,” he explains. This customer-focused approach is something that sets Norscot apart, and Nishum is proud to play a role in supporting clients through such a significant phase of their self-build journey.

Looking Ahead: Growth and Innovation

As Norscot looks to the future, Nishum is excited about the company’s plans for growth. “Norscot has a really customer-focused growth plan, increasing product offerings and visualisation options, to make sure customers can have their dream home,” he shares. For Nishum, this focus on efficiency and innovation will enable Norscot to continue offering personalised care and attention to an ever-growing number of clients.

Nishum sees sustainability, off‑grid living, and faster construction as key trends shaping the industry. He believes these developments, along with new purchase options, will help first‑time buyers move away from private rentals and toward more community‑focused housing.

From Coventry to Caithness

Nishum grew up in Coventry, a place famously known as the home of The Specials and Lady Godiva. His creative side has always been part of who he is. When he’s not busy designing at work, you can find him playing guitar, listening to music, or learning how to draw.

As a kid, Nishum dreamed of becoming a palaeontologist, inspired by his love of dinosaurs and the iconic Ross from Friends. While his career path has taken a different direction, his sense of humour has evolved too—he now admits Chandler is his favourite Friends character!

Fun Facts

Here’s a fun tidbit you might not know about Nishum: he was in a band in primary school! “We toured round other schools playing covers of our head teacher’s favourite songs—I was the bass player,” he recalls with a smile.

When it comes to movies, Nishum is a big fan of Fantastic Mr Fox. “The time and attention to detail stop-motion animation takes is incredible, and Wes Anderson’s cinematography is spectacular as always,” he shares.

And if he could have any superpower? “Teleportation,” Nishum says without hesitation. “I’d hit a couple of bank vaults first, then head to a tropical island with a bar and retire!”

We’re thrilled to have Nishum on the Norscot team, bringing his passion for design and customer care to every project he works on. Stay tuned to meet more members of our team who make Norscot a trusted name in the home improvement and self-build industries.
