About This ProjectÂ
Julia and Alan Marsh, owners of a croft in Wester Alligin, Ross-shire, wanted to diversify their income by creating a self-contained holiday let that would make the most of the surrounding landscape and stunning loch views.
The couple developed their own design and successfully secured planning permission before approaching timber frame suppliers for quotations.
While several manufacturers were unwilling to quote for a bespoke design of this size, Norscot worked closely with Julia and Alan to bring their ideas to life, producing detailed construction drawings and supporting the building warrant process.
The project was largely self-managed, with Julia and Alan undertaking much of the construction work themselves.
The Build Journey
The original programme was expected to take around two years, but a number of unforeseen challenges extended the build to four years.
These included:
- The COVID-19 pandemic
- Building material shortages
- Rising construction costs
- Family commitments, including the arrival of a new grandchild
Despite these challenges, the project continued to progress, with Norscot providing support throughout the self-build process. The timber frame kit was delivered on schedule and assembled successfully, helping the project move forward efficiently.Â

One of the most striking elements of the completed holiday let is the large glazed frontage, designed to maximise views across the loch and surrounding mountains.
