At Norscot, we take pride in our dedicated and experienced team, with each member contributing unique skills and passion to their roles. Today, we’re excited to introduce Graeme Duguid, who joined our team in March this year as an Estimator.
Born and raised in Insch, Aberdeenshire, Graeme embarked on a journey to become an Architectural Technician after school, training with a prominent partnership in Aberdeen. His career in timber frame design began in 1989, marking the start of an impressive 35-year journey. Over the years, he has progressed through various roles in design and estimating, eventually becoming a Design and Estimating Manager.
Why Norscot?
Being part of a well-established company with a clear growth vision for its timber frame division was a major attraction for Graeme, an opportunity he has eagerly embraced.
A Typical Day in the Office
“My primary responsibilities involve managing timber frame projects and window and door replacement contracts, particularly those from The Highland Council,” Graeme explains.
Each day begins with a review of tender notifications for windows and doors, ensuring he stays ahead of potential projects. The core of his day is spent evaluating new timber frame projects to determine their feasibility. If they meet Norscot’s criteria, these projects are added to his workload for pricing. Graeme coordinates with suppliers to obtain quotes for essential materials like trusses.
For each project, the company generates a detailed material take-off, providing an accurate cost estimate for the client. This meticulous process ensures that every project is financially viable and aligns with client expectations.
The Rewards of the Job
Despite being relatively new to the team, Graeme says the warm welcome he has received has been immensely rewarding. One of his early achievements includes securing a significant contract for 40 homes across Sutherland for the council. This accomplishment was particularly satisfying, marking his first major success with Norscot.
Looking Ahead: Excitement for the Future
Graeme is particularly excited about collaborating with the timber kit team to refine client offerings and presentations. Growing this segment of the company is a thrilling challenge, and he is eager to contribute to its success.
The Future of Construction and Home Improvement
Looking forward, the construction and home improvement industries are poised for significant changes. Clients are becoming increasingly discerning, expecting suppliers to deliver innovative and high-quality products. The lingering effects of post-COVID and Ukraine-related inflation will continue to pose challenges, but they also create opportunities for companies like Norscot to stand out by offering superior value and cutting-edge solutions.
Outside of Work
Graeme loves spending time outdoors, often accompanied by Mac, his energetic Working Cocker Spaniel who never seems to tire! He also enjoys honing his photography and drone skills, despite acknowledging he still has much to learn.
His favourite place to visit is Malcesine, Lake Garda, where his niece got married in 2017. He liked it so much that he returned to get married there two years later!
A little-known fact about Graeme is that he was a Special Constable for 17 years, which he describes as a great experience that allowed him to give back to the local community.
Stay tuned to meet more members of our team who make Norscot a trusted name in the home improvement and self-build industries.
