About the Project

Mark Scott and Ann Macdermid set out to create a home that would better suit their lifestyle while retaining a connection to the Isle of Scalpay, Harris.

Their original intention was to renovate Ann’s family home. However, after assessing the costs involved and considering the limitations of the existing layout, they decided that a new build would provide greater flexibility and long-term value.

After researching a range of timber frame suppliers, they selected Norscot based on product quality, customer recommendations and the support provided throughout the early stages of the project. A key factor in their decision was speaking to a previous Norscot customer who had successfully completed a self-build project in the Western Isles.

Choosing Timber Frame

Having explored several options, Mark and Ann were impressed by both the quality of the timber frame system and the finishing materials available through Norscot.

The ability to speak directly with previous customers gave them confidence that they were choosing a supplier with experience delivering homes in remote island locations. The combination of product quality, local knowledge and customer support made Norscot the right fit for their project.

The Finished Home

The completed home provides a comfortable and modern living environment while making the most of its stunning island setting.

One of the couple’s favourite spaces is the living room, where a wood-burning stove creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Large windows frame views across the surrounding landscape, making the room a focal point of the home throughout the year.

The project demonstrates how a carefully planned self-build can deliver a home that is both practical and tailored to the needs of its owners.

Lessons Learned

Reflecting on the project, Mark and Ann shared a simple but valuable piece of advice for future self-builders:

"Whatever you budget, add at least 20%"
Like many self-build projects, unforeseen costs and challenges arose during the construction process, reinforcing the importance of maintaining flexibility throughout the build.

Client Feedback

Despite building during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mark and Ann were extremely positive about their experience:

“Amazing, everyone was a pleasure to deal with.”

They also praised the aftercare they received once the home was complete, highlighting the support provided whenever questions or minor issues arose.

The couple relied heavily on showroom visits, professional advice and Norscot’s Build Cost Calculator to help plan and manage the project from start to finish.
